Braces

My 15 year old daughter needs braces but there is no way she is going to go for the old fashion wires and brackets. What is fast braces and does that consist of wires/brackets? Also, is there a difference between Invisalign and Invisalign Teen? I'm worried she won't have the self-discipline to wear the Invisalign properly. What do you recommend as the fastest/easiest but also most effective option?

Hi Alyssa,
Fastbraces is a simple process. Uses a different technology than regular braces which cuts the treatment time substantially. It usually takes three months to a year. It does use wires and brackets however they are different technology than regular wires and brackets. Also because the treatment time is short most patients who don't consider conventional braces are open to Fastbraces. Invisalign Teen is a clear removable aligned like invisalign. It is a great option for patients who don't like wires and brackets. However the compliance is a key factor and without it would not be a good choice. Also the treatment time is longer than Fastbraces. It is similar to conventional braces in that regard. The fastest and most effective option would be Fastbraces.

Lost Crown!

I was chewing bubble gum yesterday (should not have, but found some that reminded me of when I was a kid – cotton candy!) and a filling from my back jaw tooth came right out. There isn’t much left of my tooth and I’m panicking. I hate to say, I haven’t been to the Dentist in years (I don’t have one) because I’m petrified and have had bad experiences in the past. The pain I feel when I eat now or cold air hits the tooth is unbearable. What are my options???? I am really scared of having it pulled! Please help put my mind at ease.

Hi Danielle,

First off - you are not alone! Many patients have severe dental anxiety that stems from bad experiences in the past. Most dentists will take extra steps in an effort to ease an anxious patient's fear - just make sure you tell them before your appointment.

As for your tooth, again you are not alone. Fillings sometimes fall out, and there are a variety of reasons they do so. Typically a filling falls out because one of three reasons:

1) There is some decayed tooth structure under the filling (a cavity)
2) Some of the tooth around the filling has fractured
3) The filling itself has fractured

Regardless of what caused the filling to fall out, the open tooth is now more susceptible to decay and you should have it looked at by a dentist as soon as possible (especially if you're feeling sensitivity from eating and cold air). They will look at how much healthy tooth structure remains, how much (if any) decay is present, and will evaluate the health of the nerve inside the tooth. In some circumstances, a new filling can be placed if there is enough healthy tooth structure remaining. However, if most of the tooth is gone, the best option will likely be a porcelain crown.

Your tooth CAN be saved! Your best options will come from going to a dentist you feel comfortable with as soon as possible. Fewer options will be possible the longer you wait.
